Food allergies at Disney World

How to safely enjoy Disney food with allergies.

Dining on vacation can be difficult when you have specific dietary needs, but when visiting the most magical place on Earth, food can still be just as much part of the magic for you as it is for everyone else. Don’t let your food allergies slow you down at Disney World! While Walt Disney World makes it clear that they can not ever guarantee a totally allergen-free experience, Disney Dining comes out on top when it comes to options and preparations.

It is no secret that perfecting access to special diet dining at Disney World is still a work in progress - all it needs is a little faith, trust, and pixie dust, and I am here to give you just that. Not only am I a travel agent, but my wife has multiple food allergies, and she always finds the magic in her Disney dining experience, so I have all the tips you need to find your dining magic, too.

How to mange dietary needs on a Disney vacaiton

1. The My Disney Experience App is your best friend.

The app is essential for previewing menus across Walt Disney World Resort, including table service, character dining, quick service, and snacks. Quick Service dining typically breaks down their menu options by allergen. These often include common food allergies such as egg, dairy, gluten, and tree nuts/peanuts. They’ve even expanded them now to include soy and sesame.

Pro: you are prepared to order anywhere and have clear options; Con: if you have multiple allergies, you have to cross reference and modify/eliminate your options accordingly.

When ordering from a Quick Service restaurant, it’s best to order the special meal separately from the rest of your party’s regular-order and order it ahead of your party, as it takes longer for the kitchen to prepare your items safely.

2. Notify chefs, managers, cast members, servers of food allergies.

If ingredients are unclear or you are unsure of how you may or may not be able to modify them, a chef or a manager is usually available to discuss it and see that your needs are met and order is prepared accordingly. If neither person is available, notify the Cast Member or server taking your order about your specific needs before placing your order. All of the Cast Members, even at quick-service restaurants will have access to allergen notebooks and additional information to help you feel more confident about ordering food at Disney that accommodate your allergies.

3. Use a Disney Travel Agent

Additional tips for visiting Disney World with food allergies

Visit during EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival.

A visit during this Spring flower and food festival is ideal for our plant-based friends! I recommend picking up a complimentary Festival Passport guide as it will indicate plant-based options and where to fine them throughout the Festival booths. Additionally, your My Disney Experience app will indicate allergens as explained in tip number 1 above.

All-you-can-eat dining is not for everyone.

When it comes to buffets, remember that guests are typically paying a flat rate for unlimited food. While dietary needs are usually accommodated, your options might be limited, and that might make this option impractical for you. Review the menu at the buffet restaurant you’re considering to view your food allergy-friendly options, or contact them in advance if you have additional questions. Then decide if this experience is worth it for you. Sometimes it might be, especially with certain character dining experiences, but at least you can make an informed decision about what you’ll be able to enjoy and if the price point is valuable to you.

Bringing your own food into Disney World.

You also have the option of bringing in your own food, if necessary. Disney does permit you to bring in snacks, food and drinks (just no alcohol or coolers with loose ice.) While this can bring peace of mind for some food allergy families, I believe the food is part of what makes a Disney trip magical! There are so many delicious and unique options, that I’d hate for you to miss out on this part of the experience. Before you stress, skip the trip, or pack a snack — know your options. The magic is there for you, too!
